LONDON (AFX) - The number of online advertisements in the US fell in January from December, reflecting seasonal factors, but were up on a year earlier, figures from business organisation, the Conference Board showed. In January there were 3,141,800 online advertised vacancies, down 6 pct on December but up 12 pct compared with a year ago. There were 2.06 total advertised vacancies online for every 100 people in the labour force in January, down from 2.19 in December but up from 1.89 in January 2006.New online advertised vacancies totaled 1.30 for every 100 people in January, down from 1.38 in December but again up from 1.16 a year ago, the figures showed.'January's job vacancy data points to a labour market that is definitely holding its own,' said Gad Levanon, economist at The Conference Board. He noted that the online index doesn't have sufficient history to seasonally adjust the monthly data, but it is clear from the weekly data that all the declines were in the holiday weeks at the end of December and the beginning of January.'Like last year, the numbers rebounded to their pre-holiday levels by the second week of January. In addition, the number of online advertised vacancies grew significantly during the last 12 months and do not signal any weakness in the labour market,' Levanon said.jessica.mortimer@thomson.comjkm/jagCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
