LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Sanofi Pasteur MSD has applied to extend the marketing license for its cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil in Europe, following a similar move in the US last week. The company, a joint venture between Sanofi Aventis and Merck & Co, has submitted cross-protection data showing the jab protects against additional virus types not present in the vaccine, which cause more than 10 pct of cervical cancers. The virus-types also caused around 25-40 pct of pre-cancerous and potentially pre-cancerous lesions.Gardasil has been proven to provide 100 pct protection against types 6, 11, 16 and 18 of the human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted infection which cause 75 pct of all cervical cancers.amy.brown@thomson.comab/tcCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
