Telecom Italia in deal with Metroweb's to expand fibre optic network in Milan |

MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Telecom Italia SpA said that it will expand its fibre optic network and reach 70,000 buildings in Milan partly through a deal with the local cable company Metroweb.Under the deal, Telecom Italia will have the right to use for 15 years, renewable for another 15 years, Metroweb's existing fibre optic network.Telecom Italia added that the deal is part of plans to build its next-generation board network and it will invest 50 mln eur in its effort to build up the Milanese network.The company is starting the roll-out of the next generation network from Milan, with the objective to cover 65 pct of the population.Telecom Italia previously said the network will offer a bandwidth of up to 100 megabits per second compared with up to 20 Mb/s for the group's current fastest broadband ADSL service and will cost 6.5 bln eur to build over a 10-year period.philip.webster@thomson.compw/dcaCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
