Defence giant BAE Systems has today announced it will eliminate 642 UK positions as a result of a slump in its workload on some projects.
The latest reduction in headcount will affect staff across eight of its 11 UK sites and takes the job cuts total to almost 2,300 this year.
The sites affected are Portsmouth, Chelmsford, Christchurch, Isle of Wight, Filton, Frimley (Surrey), Hillend (Fife) and south-west London.
The company made a number of job reductions this year because of a lack of future contracts.
BAE has a global workforce of more than 100,000 people worldwide, with 32,600 of those based in the UK at a total of 80 sites. In 2008, global sales exceeded £18.5 billion.
Commenting on the job losses, Rory Fisher, managing director of BAE Systems, said: “We have a responsibility to address a reduction in our forecast workload and manage our cost base to remain competitive and meet our customers’ future requirements.”
“We will work with our employees and their representatives to explore ways of mitigating these potential job losses and we will ensure employees are fully supported throughout this process,” added Mr Fisher.
