More than one in five students has had their bike stolen, according to new research by M&S Money.
The poll by the home insurance provider found 22% of student cyclists have been targeted by bike thieves.
Students should register their bike model, make and frame number so it can be identified if stolen, M&S Money said.
The insurer advised students to always lock their bikes with a good quality lock, and not leave the bike in dimly lit or isolated places.
“Cycling has grown in popularity in recent years among green-minded students who want to save money and do their bit for the environment,” said Steve Price, M&S head of general insurance.
“Unfortunately, bikes are a prime target for thieves and cyclists should take basic security steps to decrease the risk of becoming a victim.”
M&S Money also found 14% of students have had their homes burgled while at university.
However, only 16% of students have taken out a home insurance policy to cover their possessions.
