London - British Airways signed a "joint business agreement" with Spanish carrier Iberia and US' American Airlines that is set to pave the way for a transatlantic joint venture, the airlines announced Thursday. The deal concerns flights between North America and Europe in an expansion of their already existing tie-ups. The airlines are Thursday to ask US and European authorities for immunity from competition regulations so the deal can go ahead. Richard Branson, the head of competitor Virgin Atlantic, criticized the planned deal, saying it would be bad for passengers, competition and the British and US airline industries.
