LONDON (Thomson Financial) - John Lewis Partnership, the employee owned retailer, said it continued to trade well in the early days of the new year following a strong Christmas performance.A trading statement from the group covering the five weeks to Jan 5 2008 said like-for-like sales increased 6.2 pct at its department stores and were up 4.1 pct (excluding petrol) at Waitrose, its supermarket chain.Total sales for department stores were up 7.6 pct, while Waitrose's total sales increased 6.1 pct (excluding petrol).'Im pleased with the performance of the divisions, particularly in the context of the demanding market conditions we faced during this important trading period,' said the retailer's chairman Charlie Mayfield.'Looking ahead, we expect the trading environment to continue to be very challenging this year.Full year results will be announced on March 6.tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.comjddCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
