Gaming Giants Eager to Progress After Outperforming Market Expectations

Republic of Ireland-headquartered gaming juggernaut Flutter Entertainment has enjoyed a remarkable period of growth.

The company announced their latest financial results for the third quarter of 2024, revealing it raised its revenue and core earnings forecast for the year despite a few bumps.

Flutter’s diverse portfolio and worldwide presence have allowed the company to weather the storms they encountered and come out on top.

Strong Financial Performance Amidst a Sea of Challenges

Flutter outperformed market expectations for the third quarter of 2024, reporting revenue of approximately $3.25 billion, up 27 percent year-on-year.

They also benefitted from 16% increase in average monthly players, totalling 12.92 million across its various gambling platforms.

Their third-quarter performance was driven by exploits in the United Kingdom (UK), Ireland, and Italy. This summer was also packed with sports action. The European Championship, the Olympic Games and the start of the new domestic football season bolstered Flutter’s numbers.

Flutter suffered a slight dip in business in the United States, but the start of the new NFL and NBA seasons have helped them recover.

The Q3 performance will help them offset expected losses from customer-friendly results later in the year. The company has now raised its full-year revenue and core earnings guidance by 1%, reinforcing its ability to ensure growth across the many markets in which it operates.

Growth in the US Market

Sports betting is growing in popularity in the US. The market is ripe with opportunities, and the company projects the addressable North American market will reach $70 billion by 2027.

Flutter plans to take advantage of this booming market, campaigning to cement their presence in states yet to legalise sports betting. Their excellent performance in the US will position the company as the leading player in the industry.

However, the company acknowledged that unfavourable sports outcomes in the fourth quarter of the year could slow their short-term performance in the US. Despite the blip, they expect their diverse portfolio and operations in other regions to help mitigate those challenges.

Flutter have also started a share buyback program and plan to expand their digital and retail offerings, positioning themselves for continuous growth in the coming years.

The Impact of Women’s Sports Betting on Future Growth

Flutter have consolidated their dominant standing in the US and global markets. However, the company is also tapping into another emerging market to drive future expansion – women’s sports betting.

While sports betting has traditionally been male-dominated, there has been a recent shift with more women increasingly keen on wagering, and platforms are beginning to cater to this new interest. Flutter is one of the companies pioneering this gender inclusivity charge.

One of their key strategies has been engaging female bettors by making their platforms more user-friendly, prioritising feng shui, ease of navigation and accessibility.

Flutter-owned platforms such as Paddy Power and Betfair refurbished their interfaces to simplify the betting experience for women. They revamped their offerings to provide more content that appeals to women.

They also expanded their portfolio of casino games, which have become hugely popular with women. Flutter, operators of one of the most successful Irish online casinos, tap into popular culture and storytelling for the female audience.

The firm expertly blends traditional gaming with relatable and engaging experiences. Their games are inspired by popular movies, television shows and historical themes, encouraging female participation.

Flutter has also taken more interest in women’s sports, which is expected to become a crucial driver of the company’s long-term growth. They sponsored and promoted women’s international sports tournaments such as the Women’s World Cup and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Apart from raising awareness around women’s sports, this initiative encourages more female fans to engage with the Flutter brand.

The firm has introduced special promotions and betting markets for solely women’s sports, leveraging the popularity of athletes such as Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark to broaden their appeal to the female demographic.

Sports Trading Senior Director Matt Hammond spoke about their platforms creating a different section specifically for Clark because people were logging in just to bet on her. This move will spotlight women’s games while encouraging them to engage and place wagers.

Another crucial element in inviting women into the gaming space is ensuring it is safe, and Flutter leads the responsible gaming charge. Their platforms embed features that keep players safe, such as spending limits and detailed statistics tracking behaviour.

They also have educational content around their platforms to help customers make informed decisions. Female users appreciate and value platforms that consider player welfare.
