McDonald was born in Croydon, London, England. Her father was a carpenter who later became a property developer and her mother worked as a clerk at the General Post Office.
At the age of five years old, McDonald attended St Joseph’s Convent School in Croydon before attending Croydon High School for Girls from 1965 to 1967 when she left with no qualifications. After leaving school, McDonald went on to work for British Rail as an office clerk.

In 1978, McDonald made her first public appearance on stage at The Golden Lion pub in Kingsbury Road, Brentford where she performed along with her friend Kim Goody. In 1980 she joined the band “Fanny” which included Kim Goody and then later joined the band “The Love Machine” which included Dave Seaman who would later become part of The Pet Shop Boys.
